Two arrests after modern slavery operation in Oldham

7th February 2019

A man and woman have been arrested following a modern slavery operation in Oldham, with seven people moved to safety.

Investigators from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) were supported by Greater Manchester Police officers and the Department for Work and Pensions in the operation at an address south of the town centre on the morning of Thursday 7 February.

Seven people, who are all Romanian nationals, have been removed from the property and are now receiving the help and support that they need.

A 48-year-old Romanian man and 50-year-old woman, also Romanian, have been arrested by the GLAA on suspicion of modern slavery offences. Both are currently in custody being questioned.

Officers acted after receiving reports that a number of people were being controlled and exploited at the address.

GLAA Senior Investigating Officer Martin Plimmer said: “Our number one priority is to ensure that vulnerable and exploited workers are protected at the earliest opportunity so reports of this nature are treated with the utmost importance.

“The investigation is still in its early stages, as we assess the evidence we have seized from the address. We will also be speaking to the people removed from the property once they have been supported to understand more about their working and living conditions, and their relationship with the suspects.

“I would urge the public to be aware of the signs of modern slavery, whether that’s in their neighbourhood, on their way to work, or anywhere else. Information you provide means that we can disrupt labour exploitation, bring offenders to justice, and give victims a chance to live their lives free from abuse.”

If you suspect someone near you is being exploited, call our dedicated intelligence team on 0800 4320804 or email intelligence@gla.gov.uk
